Phase 1 of Forest Inventory Visualization

The first phase of the landscape level inventory visualization project involved learning to use Visual Nature Studio (VNS) in conjunction with digital elevation models, satellite imagery and shape files to produce 3D vegetation maps. In this learning stage we focused on tying values in the data files to those in the VNS images. The data in these files was highly generalized and should not be considered in any way factually reliable. In producing these images, land areas were broken into three classifications: tree, and urban and field (please note that both field and urban areas both appear as vacant fields). Architectual structures are absent. Forest types are generalized into 10-acre square units of hardwood and softwood. The tree age classifications were generalized into three classes (1-10 years, 11-20 years, and > 21) and later into five classes (0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, and > 21).  Images used for illustrating the individual tree objects were in many cases not those of actual southern species.
