R.    Part II

    1. Long Range Plans

Objectives

1. Continue research of implicitly-defined growth and yield models (relevant to my Fiber Supply Assessment bibliography) for use on forested lands and evaluate methods in which they are developed and applied.

2. Develop a database with the most up-to-date inventory information for Georgia using FIA/SAFIS, where publicly available, and other data publicly available or solicited from private companies for the purpose of complementing the information contained in the FIA data.

3. Develop and simulate specific scenarios to evaluate the sensitivity of the inventory to various levels of management, harvests and regeneration assumptions and to improve understanding of the dynamics and sustainability of Georgia's timber inventory by simulating inventory development over time using the OPTIONS software.

4. Develop a research and analysis program for inventory updates and simulations in Georgia.

5. Continue analyzing sources and types of errors associated with different types of implicitly-defined models in inventory updates and identify all relevant literature that can contribute to the definition and treatment of these errors.

6. Continue developing standard procedures that can be used for estimation of these errors and their distributions in applications related to inventory projections.

7. Continue developing and publishing methodologies for derivation of the well-behaved inventory projection models.

8. Develop and publish generic, theoretical implicitly-defined models for different applications relating to inventory projections.

9. Develop and publish empirical implicitly-definedimplicitly defined models to meet current demands and needs relating to inventory updating and forecasting in the region and elsewhere using existing or collected data.

10. Research and analyze commonalities and merits between the nonlinear mixed effects models and the implicitly-defined models.

11. Identify potentially dangerous or costly misconceptions or malpractices in the field of implicitly-defined modeling and research the sources of problems and suggest solutions.

12. Examine opportunities for improving inventory update procedures using proper developments of well-behaved, biologically based implicitly-defined models through increasing knowledge about methods and procedures used in data analysis.

13. Investigate propagation of different distributions of inventory errors in inventory projections using non-linear implicitly-defined models.

14. Continue to publish examples of improved developments for implicitly-defined models that exist in the literature.

15. Contribute to professional and public education in all areas of understanding of the implicitly defined models and their uses through public speaking and technology transfer and research publications.

16. Acquire or collect data necessary for above outlined points: 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13.

17. Establish Internet-based information processing center for the annual inventory updates.

18. Establish and implement tech-transfer and communication means for the developed new technologies.

19. Develop a web site to help disseminate the information that is developed within the Fiber Supply Assessment program.

57.  Short Range Plans

Objectives

1. Initiate development of a database with the available most up-to-date inventory information for Georgia using FIA/SAFIS data that is publicly available and other data publicly available or solicited from private companies that would agree to complement the information contained in the FIA data.

2. Initiate development of the inventory analyses program and in the coming year conduct initial simulations of specific scenarios to evaluate the sensitivity of the inventory to various levels of management, harvests and regeneration.   assumptions and to improve understanding of the dynamics and sustainability of Georgia's timber inventory by simulating inventory development over time using the OPTIONS software.

3. Develop a web site to help disseminate the information that is developed during this project.

4. Continue developing and publishing methodologies for derivation of the well-behaved inventory projection models.

58.  Met Stated Objectives?

Met Objectives

1. Continued research of implicitly-defined growth and yield models (relevant to my Fiber Supply Assessment bibliography) for use on forested lands, and evaluated methods in which they are developed and applied; have researched the subject and published papers in this area.

2. Continued evaluating the prediction models and costs of their use with individual model examples from the literature and generated from them pseudo-data.

3. Continued analyzing sources and types of errors associated with different types of implicitly-defined models used in inventory updates and submitted a manuscript on stochastic modeling of these errors.

4. Continued developing standard procedures that can be used for estimation of these errors and their distributions, in applications related to inventory projections; study described in the same manuscript as in point 3.

5. Continued developing and publishing methodologies for derivation of the well-behaved inventory projection models.

6. Developed and published generic theoretical implicitly-defined models for different applications relating to inventory projections.

7. Developed and published empirical implicitly-defined models to meet current demands and needs relating to inventory update and forecasting in the region, using pseudo-data.

8. Researched and analyzed commonalities and merits between the nonlinear mixed effects models and the implicitly-defined models and developed a theoretical and practical proves of the parallel properties (presented the results on a conference and during a short course, for which got a letter of commendation from an industry member).

59.  Budget Requirements

Requirements

Basic budget for two positions in Fiber Supply Assessment for travel, basic software upgrades and supplies is $10,000 (i.e., $6,000+$4,000).

Any major software and equipment upgrades will hopefully be purchased from grant money.
